It is N994 to $1 today 28th September and all we are talking about is Tinubu’s certificate?
Certificate is good, but I would not advocate or support its acquisition by any means hook or crook.
The truth is that certificates don’t lead, people do. You may have all the certificates in the world and still be unable to lead. On the other hand, another person may not have a single certificate but still make an excellent leader. You know why? The answer lies in the level of leadership intuition, character, competence and capacity. Others are social and emotional intelligence. People are not equally endowed in terms of these attributes.
Why is Ashiwaju’s certificate, or lack of it, trending? Why would it’s release cause him, in his own words, “severe and irreparable harm”? Because there is suspicion of forgery, impersonation, or both – something that puts a big question mark on his character. When a leader is enamoured with question marks on his person and his methods, then there is a problem of trust, and by extension, followership
But is the allegation true? Nobody knows for sure. What we know is that he is today the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Ashiwaju’s ability to lead is not in doubt, but it is obvious that he is overwhelmed right now. Yes, clearly he is overwhelmed. His much trumpeted experience and achievement as Lagos State Governor has not shown so far.
But it is early days yet, and Nigeria is not Lagos. Truth however is that the country is in serious economic dire straits and directionless right now.
Yet what people are talking about is Mr. President’s academic certificate. Somehow, I get the feeling the man himself is deliberately enabling the trend on his certificate to divert attention from the economy.
If Buhari’s problem was that he was taciturn and talked less, Tinubu’s problem is that he talks a lot and says more than is solicited. I think he should help kill the controversy surrounding his certificate. He should settle down to lead. One hundred (100) days in office is enough to at least give indication the direction the economy is going. Persistent and progressive crashing of our national currency is obviously not the right direction. The portents are ominous. There is clear and present danger.
