Wike the ‘agama’ lizard losing ground as loyal policemen are moved out of govt house

Security reorganisation has taken place in the vicinity of the Rivers due to the dismissal of the Government’s House Chief Security Officer, CSO, whom Governor Siminalayi Fubara Inherited from his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. As per the directives issued by the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, officers who previously worked for Wike and were succeeded by Fubara at Government’s House were assigned to lead different units of the state’s law enforcement agency. The signal, dated October 31, 2023, was signed by AIG Olarewaju Yomi Oladimeji, Secretary of the Police Force. Notably, Promise Nwosu, the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Wike, was appointed as the new chief of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) codenamed Base 6 of the Rivers Command. Nwosu was an heir apparent to Fubara. The authorities established the SPU in 2009 to increase security around diplomats and VIPs. Allegedly, Fubara dismissed Nwosu as his CSO last week in the midst of an impeachment conspiracy against him. Additional law enforcement personnel impacted by the redeployment who are presumed to be loyal to Wike include Emmanuel Nwakanma and Irikefe London Owen, a former camp commandant of Rivers Government House. They have been deployed to head the Rivers Police Command Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and ‘Operation Sting’ respectively. “Operation Sting’ was a special police outfit launched by Wike in 2019 to tackle security challenges in the state. But the posting of the ex-state House security chiefs loyal to Wike has resulted in disquiet and anxiety in Rivers. While the posting of the police officers out of the Government’s House will certainly be a thing of relief for Fubara and his supporters, their posting to head critical police units, it was gathered is another source of concern for the Governor. Sources close to the Governor believed that the move was to hijack all the security architecture in Rivers State in favour of the FCT Minister for easy impeachment of Governor Fubara The Governor had last Monday accused ‘compromised’ officers of Rivers Command led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police of shooting tear gas and bullet at him on his way to the burnt Rivers House of Assembly.
