For parading himself as Oba, Onibeju may end in jail

A Lagos monarch, Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Rasaki a.k.a. Rasaq Waliu Oluwo, the Onibeju of Ibeju Kingdom, has been for allegedly parading himself as Oba of Ibeju Kingdom, in defiance to an order of a Lagos High Court.

It would be recalled that Justice K. O. Dawodu had on December 12, 2023, ordered the Lagos State government to reverse the Oba’s installation as well restrained him from parading himself as Oba of Ibeju Kingdom.

Justice Dawodu made the orders while granting mandatory injunction filed by Prince Adewale Adeyemi Abdul Rauf Oniwonlu against the deposed Oba listed as ninth defendant and 21 others in a suit numbered LD/9297GCMW/2022.

Others listed as defendants in the suit are: the Executive Governor of Lagos State, the Honourable Attorney General of Lagos State, the Honourable Commissioner For Local Government and Community Affairs, Lagos State, the Ibeju Lekki Local Government, High Chief Moshood Musefiu Adewole (Chief Aro of Iberekodo and Onibeju Kingmaker}, Chief Shuaib Oloritun Bobagunwa (Bobagunwa of Ibeju Land), Prince (Chief) Talibi Adesanya Idogun (Chief idogun of Ibeju Land and Onibeju Kingmaker), and Chief Tawaliu Abu (Sasore of Ibeju Land and Onibeju Kingmaker) For themselves and on behalf of the Onibeju Kingmakers of Agbedua House Ibeju

Others include: Prince Seidu Hassan Ayinuvara Oniwonlu (Head of Oba Badesuwo Branch of Oniwonlu Royal Family of Ibeju-Agbe), Prince Wasiv Apena -idogun (Head of Oba Ogunfayo Branch of Oniwonlu Royal Family of Iwerekun), Alhaji (Prince) Aliru Sanusi (Head of Oba Olumoye Branch of Oniwolu Royal Family of Akodo}, Prince (Chief) Adewale Lawal (The Iwaju-Oba of Akodo. ibeju Kingdom and Chairman, Oniwoniu Obaship Selection Committee), Prince Adegunwa Adeboyejo (Baale of Eputu Town) Member, Oniwonlu Obaship Selection Committee), Prince Quadri Babatunde Surakat Idogun (Member. Oniwonlu Obaship Selection Committee), Prince Sikiru Adeniran (Member. The judge, in the mandatory injunction, held that the stool of the Onibeju of Ibeju remains vacant pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

However, the applicant, Prince Adewale Adeyemi Abdul Rauf Oniwonlu, alleged that while the orders still subsists, the deposed monarch continues to parade himself as Onibeju of Ibeju and making various appearances in public occasions as Oba and also alleging in the media that the order of the Court was unruly and that he has appealed against the order.

Consequently, the applicant has filed a Form 48, consequence of disobedience of Court order and served same on the deposed Oba by publication in the Nation Newspaper of Monday, December 18, 2023.

Meanwhile, hearing of the substantive suit has been fixed for February 14, 2024, and the contempt proceedings against Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi may be heard.
