Days after the duo, 2baba, real name, Innocent Idibia, and Efe Omorogbe of Now Muzik mutually agreed to part ways, the CEO of Now Muzik that managed 2baba for two decades has at last opened up on the musician in this exclusive online interview with Charles Okogene.
Read on.
Tell us; how did your path and that of 2baba crossed?
We first met back in ’97/98 while I was associate editor at Hip-hop World magazine. He strolled in one afternoon with his band mate, Blackface. They introduced themselves as Plantashun Boiz and requested a mention in the then widely popular magazine. They didn’t have recorded music on them to show us what they were about, but they performed an capella for us, of what would later be the smash debut, “Knock Mi Off”.
The rest as they say, is history.
Why 2baba, why not Blackface or Faze?
It was him for a couple of reasons. First, opportunity. The management conversation sprouted from a chance discussion we had when he gave me an interview for the hit show, Global Sounds on which I was associate producer.
Secondly, we clicked better than the others during their time as Plantashun Boiz.
It also was evident he’s always been special, no disrespect to anyone else. Now Muzik actually had a stint with Faze at some point also.
Was he the first act on Now Muzik?
No; he wasn’t. Now Muzik had worked with Slick, Funke, Felix Duke, Daniel Wilson, Tunde and Wunmi Obe, Sunny Neji. I think, before 2face Idibia.
What was it like working with him especially that time robbers shot him?
It always required tremendous effort, dedication and finesse but usually yielding impressive results. The robbery incident and other difficult times were challenging but they all made the eventual wins gratifying. We had an amazing ride.
Now that both of you have gone your separate ways, what will you miss in him?
Innocent is an outrageously talented guy. Working with him through creating music and delivering big performances was magic.
In a few words, what kind of person is 2baba?
2baba is royalty. Innocent is a cool guy. He is laid back, charming, funny, peaceable and impossible when he finds a reason to be.
