Netizens react as Burna Boy’s four hit songs were sampled from Fela Kuti as they celebrate his 84th posthumous birthday



Music lovers in Nigeria have expressed that Grammy Award winner, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, should be worshipping late Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, as they celebrate his 84th posthumous birthday.

Recall that Fela Kuti who died at the age of 58-year-old on August 2nd, 1997 was born on October 15th 1938 and by extension he is supposed to have clock 84-year-old as of 2024.

In celebration of Fela Kuti’s 84th birthday, a netizen created content highlighting how artistes worldwide have sampled the late legend’s music. Burna Boy tops the list of artistes who have drawn inspiration from Fela’s work.

However, not only that Burna Boy sample from Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s songs, all the four Burna Boy songs in the content created to celebrate Fela’s 84th posthumous birthday were all hits tracks.

Burna Boy’s hit song “Ye” which was released in 2018 from the “Outside” album was sampled from Fela’s “Colonial mentality” which was released in 1977.

Burna Boy’s hit song “Dangote” from the African Giant album which was released in 2019 was from Fela Kuti’s “Trouble sleep yanga wake am” released in 1972.

Burna Boy’s hit song “Collateral Damage” from the African Giant album released in 2019 was sampled from Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow, tears & blood” released in 1977.

Burna Boy’s verse in the hit song “Temper Remix” released in 2017 featuring Skales was sampled from Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow, tears & blood” in the year 1977.

Other songs in the list are; “Jaiye Jaiye” by Wizkid (2013) sampled from Fela’s “Lady” (1974), J. Cole’s “Let Nas Down” 2013 from Fela’s “Gentleman” (1973), Missy Elliot (2021) “What’cha Gon do” from Fela “Colonial mentality” (1977), Mos Def “Fear not of men” (1999) from Fela “Fear not for men” 1977.
