Natasha/Akpabio sexual tago: What Ita-Giwa meant

By Patrick Doyle

Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa’s response to the sexual harassment issue at the Senate has been gravely misunderstood. What she said and meant was that when one rises to the status of a Senator, one isn’t expected to make such an issue a media fiesta. She repeatedly said she didn’t disbelieve Senator Akpoti but that the Senate is such a revered institution that matters of this nature should never be heard of there.
Senator Ita-Giwa insisted that misogyny and other such vices may exist in the Senate, but that there were inbuilt mechanisms in the Senate to deal with it. She even went on to suggest that this particular Senate may have planted the seed for the present scandal by elevating the office of the Senate President to a cult status such that the Senate President is being addressed as “Sir” by fellow Senators. This master/servant tendency could lead to a situation where a female Senator may see the need to publicly out a “superior” for an act perceived as sexual harassment.
The presenters of the show, however, made the case worse for her by not interrogating the interesting angle she was introducing to the discourse. Instead, Rufai Oseni, as usual, went for the kill and presented the viewing public with a new personality to witchhunt.
