The Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF)torch tour berthed in Owerri, the Imo state capital even as the state concluded final trials for over 670 athletes that emerged from the local government and federal constituency trials.
Meanwhile, the festival Torch Light which commenced its tours of the Nine mandate states of The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, would be arriving Imo on Thursday, 27th of March 2025.
The Festival Torch Lighting Ceremony in Imo commenced Thursday morning with the arrival of the Torch at the Dan Anyiam Stadium and was received by the state’s Festival Ambassador, Mr. Emmanuel Amunike, MFR.
This was followed by a procession to Government House Gate where Amunike handed over the Torch Light to the Honourable Commissioner For Sports, Hon. Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha.
The Commissioner proceeded to hand over the Torch to the Executive Governor Of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Sen. Hope Uzodinma, and thereafter at a brief ceremony before handing over to MOC.
Meanwhile, the state trials held over two-days, commencing on Monday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium with an initial over one thousand athletes registered for a place in the state contingent for the NDSF scheduled for Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from April 1-8.
Members Of the State Liaison Committee for the festival led by the chairman who also is the state Commissioner for Sports, and the Secretary, Hon. Willie Okolieogwo were on ground supervising the exercise and ensuring compliances to rules.
At the end of the exercise, about 430 selected athletes would be invited to a closed camping which will commence on the 29th of March, 2025 till departure date of April 1st.
