Edo State: Calling Okpebholo to order

The recent controversial victory of Governor Okpebholo in Edo State, confirmed by the Supreme Court, has led to significant scrutiny of his governance. Since assuming office, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s performances have raised serious questions about his fitness to govern the state effectively. Several incidents and allegations have contributed to these concerns.

First, he struggled to effectively read his own budget before the Edo State House of Assembly. This incident sparked concerns about his preparedness and capability to manage the state’s affairs, just as people questioned his educational background before the election.

There are accusations that Governor Okpebholo has appointed motor-park touts as tax consultants. These individuals are allegedly molesting Edo citizens, creating an environment where the state seems to be treated like an unorganised motor-park. This has led to questions about the governor’s judgment and priorities in appointments.

Besides, Governor Okpebholo is accused of using double speak, and not standing firm for his people, in handling the Uromi-16 incident, where those killed were reportedly hunters, but in reality are, possibly, terrorists. Given that hunters in Nigeria are not licensed to carry AK47, but specific light weapons meant for gaming, and typically do not engage in inter-state hunting, the origins and intentions of the Uromi-16 remain unclear, further adding to the controversy.

Critics argue that Governor Okpebholo’s actions and words suggest he is more aligned with serving the interests of his sponsors, the APC party, and by extension, President Bola Tinubu, rather than defending the interests of Edolites. Examples of this alleged alignment include: His promised 2.5million Edo votes for Tinubu reelection in the 2027; and his imposed ban on Peter Obi visiting Edo State – this decision raises constitutional questions about the governor’s powers to restrict the movement of citizens and the implications for freedom of movement as stipulated in the constitution.

The decision to publicly announce a ban on a political figure like Peter Obi has been criticized as an action of someone lacking basic knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the office of governor.

Given these controversies and allegations, there is a growing call for Governor Okpebholo to be “called to order.” His managers and advisors need to seriously educate him on the duties of his office, emphasizing the importance of acting in the best interests of Edo State citizens, respecting constitutional rights, and making decisions that benefit the state rather than serving narrow political or external interests.

The governance of Edo State under Governor Okpebholo is facing scrutiny due to several controversial actions and allegations of misalignment with the interests of Edolites. Addressing these concerns requires a focus on accountability, adherence to constitutional principles, and governance that prioritizes the welfare and rights of all citizens of Edo State.
