An open letter to Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR

By Swill Mavua

Your Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Dear President Jonathan,

I hope this letter finds you well. As you consider your political future, I wanted to take a moment to advise you against running in the 2027 presidential election. I recognize that this act is highly unsolicited, though. While your dedication to public service is commendable, I believe that another presidential bid may not be in your best interest or that of the country.

In the five years of your tenure as president, your administration’s legacies, remain, as they were, better than what the opposition has offered Nigeria in the past decade of their reign. Legacies such as the transformation of telecommunications, banking, education, tourism and entertainment sectors, and efforts to improve the nation’s infrastructure, are notable achievements.

However, your presidency was marred by controversy, orchestrated by the opposition, which included the label of ‘one-chance, corruption, clueless president and an ineffectual Buffon; besides criticisms of your handling of the Boko Haram insurgency. These assertions may again be played up by your opponents to negatively impact your electability and the country’s progress.

Your humility and peaceful nature are traits that have earned you respect globally. Your voluntary congratulations of President Buhari in 2015, despite your supporters’ reservations, demonstrated your commitment to democratic principles and national stability. These qualities make you an excellent peace envoy for the United Nations, a role that leverages your reputation for promoting peace and stability.

Nigerian politics is known for its cutthroat nature, requiring politicians to be assertive, crooked and sometimes confrontational. Given your peaceful and humble demeanor, you might find it challenging to navigate the complexities and controversies that come with the territory. Your nature, while commendable, may not be well-suited for the intense scrutiny and criticism that accompanies a presidential campaign.

Some might see you as a potential candidate to weaken Peter Obi’s popularity or as a compromise candidate. However, this could be a miscalculation, given your own strengths and the respect you command globally. Those drafting you into the fray might be pursuing selfish agendas that do not align with your interests or values.

Your worldwide reputation as a statesman and peace envoy is invaluable. By staying engaged in peacebuilding and development initiatives, you can continue to make a positive impact without exposing yourself to the intense political fray. Your role as a peace envoy for the United Nations is a testament to your ability to promote peace and stability globally.

In light of these considerations, I respectfully advise you to focus on your peacebuilding efforts and philanthropic work rather than pursuing another presidential bid. Your contributions to Nigeria and the world would be more impactful and enduring in these roles. By doing so, you can maintain your dignity, promote peace, and continue to inspire future generations of leaders.

Sincerely yours
Swill Mavua.
