In a meeting under the auspices of Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, the mediator appointed by the Delta State governor to resolve the discord arising from the screening of civil servants to weed out over aged people, the Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday endorsed the ongoing exercise and pledged cooperation with the committee.
The meeting was convened by Solomon who was mandated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to mediate with organised labour and the committee screening civil servants that led to misunderstanding of the verification exercise to weed out those who may have stayed beyond the statutory 60 years retirement age or continued in service after 35 years in service.
Lady Roseline Eno Amioku, chairman of the Civil Service Commission and chairman of the screening committee, led her team to explain the essence of the exercise to organised labour.
Comrade Goodluck Oforbruku, chairman of the Delta State council of NLC led the joint action committee of the various labour groups to the meeting. Speaking after Lady Roseline illustrated the parameters the committee used in undertaking is assignment, Oforbruku expressed confidence in the activities of the screening committee, urging it to continue its assignment diligently. He said the earlier version of events from some retirees caused the misunderstanding, adding that with the explanations, the NLC now has a fuller understanding of the issue. “The NLC will not destalise the work of the committee”, he said.
“What has happened today is in line with stakeholder engagement as enunciated in Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.
Beyond understanding the truth that some civil servants lied over their age, I urge the leadership of NLC to continue on the path of openness. NLC should sensitise their members on the need to play by the rules and eschew the tendency to fraudulently alter their age and years of service”, Solomon said.
