The seeming ongoing feud between Peter Obi and Charles Soludo has indeed sparked intense debate in Nigerian politics, with Soludo’s attacks on Obi’s investment claims and presidential ambitions drawing widespread criticism. Many view Soludo’s comments as unwarranted and driven by envy of Obi’s popularity in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Soludo’s article dismissing Obi’s investments in Anambra State as “next to nothing” was met with outrage from Obi’s supporters, who accuse the governor of jealousy and desperation. That wasn’t the first time Soludo has faced criticism for his comments on public issues. In 2015, former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, responded to one of Soludo’s articles with 23 points, highlighting his alleged lack of facts, logic, and honour.
Despite Soludo’s harsh words, Obi has chosen not to engage directly with the criticism, instead focusing on his presidential campaign and emphasizing good governance and accountability. Obi’s supporters, and indeed, the Obidient movement, have come to his defense, condemning Soludo’s attacks as baseless and malicious.
Obi’s supporters have been vocal in their criticism of Soludo, accusing him of hate speech and envy. Many have taken to social media to express their outrage, questioning Soludo’s motives and calling for him to focus on his gubernatorial duties. Chuks Ibegbu, former spokesperson of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has also criticized Soludo, dismissing his claims about Igbo youths as false and unfounded.
Some prominent scholars – including a former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) – have spoken out in support of Obi, criticizing Soludo’s attacks as uncalled for and divisive. While it may not be needful to name specific scholars in recent contexts, notable figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who previously responded to Soludo’s comments, highlighting his alleged lack of facts and professionalism, underscores a lot about the personality of Soludo. These scholars argue that Soludo should prioritize governance and development in Anambra State rather than engaging in personal attacks.
The orchestrated feud against Obi by Soludo highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics, where personal attacks and tribal sentiments often dominate public discourse. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will shape the country’s future. More so, Soludo’s reelection bill for the Anambra governorship scheduled for November 2025. And, one thing is certain: the debate surrounding Obi and Soludo will continue to be closely watched by Nigerians and political analysts alike.
Soludo’s attacks on Obi have, no doubt, sparked intense debate, with many questioning the governor’s motives and criticizing his comments as divisive and lacking factual basis. As the situation unfolds, Charles Soludo needs to recognise that it’s essential to prioritize factual information and constructive dialogue in Nigerian politics.
