The Delta State Government on Tuesday flagged off the long-awaited reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road, with Commissioner for Works (Highways), Comrade Reuben Izeze, describing the project as a landmark step in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s drive to transform the state’s infrastructure.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Izeze praised the governor’s leadership, saying the project reflects a clear and purposeful vision aimed at easing movement, boosting economic activities, and ending years of hardship for commuters and businesses along the critical corridor.
“This is not just another road project,” Izeze said. “It is a 10-kilometre dual carriageway, with each lane spanning 5 kilometres and a carriage width of 8.8 metres. It has been designed for durability and improved traffic flow, a standard not often seen in our region.”
The commissioner noted that prior to the reconstruction, a trip that should take six minutes could stretch into several frustrating hours due to the road’s deplorable condition.
He described the new project as a bold intervention by Governor Oborevwori, who undertook the massive rehabilitation on behalf of the Federal Government.
“Many doubted this would happen, but today, we are standing on the construction site. This is progress in action,” Izeze said.
He also acknowledged the partnership with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the company handling the reconstruction, commending their commitment to delivering a high-quality road.
Key beneficiaries of the improved road access include religious and commercial centres such as the Mercyland complex, as well as industries dependent on smooth transportation routes.
The event was attended by several top government officials, including Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Traditional rulers including HRM Emmanuel Sideso, OON, Abe I, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom among others.
Comrade Izeze concluded his address with a message of gratitude: “We thank His Excellency for his foresight and leadership. I am glad to labour for Deltans under the stewardship of His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.”
The project is one of several large-scale infrastructure developments under the Oborevwori administration, which has made road rehabilitation a major pillar of its MORE agenda.
