Truly, Fela lives

By Charles Okogene

Truly Fela lives, 28 years after his transition to the world beyond. And if you are in doubt, take a trip to Pan African Centre on Ozumba Mbadiwe Victoria Island, the venue of the ongoing “Fela: Afrobeat Rebellion” that is organised by Olabode Bello and sponsored by Open Society, an NGO before the curtain draws.

Everything about the iconic musician that came out of Nigeria ranging from written works from different authors to video and musical materials are on display there. In fact, from what Society Weekly saw there, we are convinced that he is the most documented act from Nigeria if not Africa. Why not, after all, he was the founder of a form of music, Afrobeat, that is played the world over by other musicians and corrupted to mean Afrobeats.

His direct sons, Femi and Seun, who are keeping the authentic afrobeat music flag flying have also performed at the venue; even his grandson, Made.

Eminent Nigerians like Benson Idonije his first manager, internationally  acclaimed journalist, Dele Olojode, have been there to participate in the afrobeat music talks that has been stage side by side with the exhibition.

The exhibition last till December 29,2025.
