Delta State has intensified its grassroots sports development drive as preparations begin for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, scheduled to hold in Edo State.
As part of the build-up to the competition, coaches and technical officials have commenced the registration of athletes across the state. The exercise is aimed at identifying and selecting the best talents from the 25 local government areas who will represent Delta State at the sporting fiesta.
Speaking on the preparations, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Liaison Committee, Hon. Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori, said the state is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that only the most outstanding athletes are scouted for the Games.
He added that athletes are being drawn from the three senatorial districts of the state and across the 17 sports associations that will participate in the competition.
According to him, the grassroots approach is designed to give every talented sportsman and woman in the state an equal opportunity to be discovered and to proudly wear the colours of Delta State at the Niger Delta Games.
Hon. Oborevwori further assured that Team Delta will improve on its performance at this year’s edition, having narrowly lost the top position at the first edition in Uyo last year to Bayelsa State by just one gold medal difference (42 to Delta State’s 41), as handlers of Team Delta have vowed to bring the trophy home.
He stated that the exercise reflects the commitment of the Oborevwori MORE Agenda administration to sports development, talent discovery, and the continued growth of sports in Delta State.
