As preparations continue to gather momentum towards the commencement of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, NDG, Akwa Ibom state liaison committee for the games has released its schedule for the state trials.
Arising from a meeting with Head Coaches of the various sports which was held yesterday, Tuesday, at Nest of Champions, the chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, noted that the trials will present the veritable platform to select the best athletes to go on and represent the state when the games get under way next month.
Mr Bassey stated that all logistics have been provided to ensure a hitch-free trial exercise, and charged coaches to be firm, fair and credible throughout the exercise in order to ensure that only the best athletes are selected to represent the state with a view to improving on the state’s sixth place finish at the maiden edition of the games.
According to a release signed by the director of coaching, Mrs Catherine Ewa, who’s also the head of technical sub-committee, the state trials will take place from Thursday, January 29, to Tuesday, February 3, at Nest of Champions, Uyo Township Stadium, West Itam Sports Centre and Ibom Icon Hotel and Golf Resort.
Taekwondo will open things up on Thursday, January 29, at Nest of Champions, from 4 p.m. while boxing, handball, volleyball and chess will take their turns the following day.
While individual sports will have their trails on one day, the trials for team sports will spiral into two or more days.
The 2nd Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited, will be held in Benin, Edo State, from February 20 – 27, and will be attended by all nine states of the country’s Niger Delta region.
