Taekwondo sets the tone as Akwa Ibom begins state trials for NDG Edo 2026

Following the successful conclusion of Local Government Trials, Akwa Ibom began, today, Thursday, state trials for the second Niger Delta Games Edo 2026.

The trials, which have been slated for five days, opened with Taekwondo taking the centre stage at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

At the end of a pulsating, high-tempo competition in the various events of the sport, eight out of twelve previously registered fighters emerged as state representatives for the games, comprising four male and as many female.

Speaking at the centre, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, who was represented by the state’s director of coaching, Mrs Catherine Ewa, expressed satisfaction with the competitiveness, zest and panache that the athletes exuded.

“We registered twelve extremely young and vibrant fighters on the games’ portal, unfortunately only eight can be selected.” She said.

“I am happy to witness the high level of competitiveness that these youngsters have showcased here today, and I’m totally positive of what the future portends for sports in our state.” She added.

The excitement of one of the selected female fighters, Victory Charles, knew no bounds as she tried to put her emotions into words.

“I’m very happy to be selected, and I promise to represent my state to the best of my ability.” “I thank the organizers for giving me the platform to showcase my talents, and I promise not to disappoint them.”

The second Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited, will be held from February 20 to 27, at Edo state, and will be competed by all nine states of Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.
