NDG: New talents discovered as Edo weightlifting, Kokowa conclude screening exercise

… Coach Omoroghomwan salutes commission boss

As the screening exercise for the selection of Athletes for the forthcoming second Niger Delta Games continues,Edo Weightlifting Association and traditional wrestling ( Kokowa) have concluded their trials with some newly discovered talents making the teams that will represent the host state at the games.

Thankgod Sunday and Francis Onaifo (Male) are the new prospects in the weightlifting Association. The duo were discovered in Ovia North East Local Government Area during the local government screening exercise and have been listed by the head coach Ikponmwosa Omoroghomwan for the games proper.

Others in the team include Esther Adebayor Adebayor, Beauty Akporere ,Peace. Osagie. Joy. Benedict ,Favour Cornelius ,Jacob Good news,Timilehin Williams and Odion Edegbe who also made the team.

In the traditional wrestling (Kokowa) Murtala Usman 70kg,Mustapha Kabir (45Kg),Salihu Nuru (62kg) and
Bashir Tenimu (55kg) have been confirmed male athletes to fight for Edo State. These athletes are discovered talents from Agbede and Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area.

In the female category of Kokowa,Abies Beatrice Osagiede(50Kg),Ivie Osagiede (42),Ogiemwonyi Sarah(58Kg) and Dogo Favour made the team.

In their separate interviews the head coach of Weightlifting, Ikponmwosa Omoroghomwan and Umoru Zingida of Kokowa expressed satisfaction with the progress the athletes are making and the competition so far in their camps.

The weightlifting coach commended the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele for his support and encouragement to the team.
” We are ready for the games and we thank our honourable chairman for his support. Weightlifting is not an easy task that is why we started early and we are good to go. I’m happy with the progress we have made at the grassroots. Apart from the two boys we discovered newly,we have kids of 13,14 and 15 years that have been discovered through the local government screening exercise which attracted school children. In the next edition of the Niger Delta Games, we shall be feeding some of these young talents.

The final lap of team Edo screening exercise ahead of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games in Benin hold on Tuesday as the chairman of the Sports Commission Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele has directed that athletes and coaches be moved into close comping beginning from Sunday.
