Few days after the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chiedu Ebie (Esq) embarked on an inspection tour of on-going projects across various communities in Ika Federal Constituency in Delta state, reconstruction work has commenced at Agbor Alidinma General Hospital and Agbor Alidinma Government Secondary School. The reconstruction projects were attracted to the communities by the Governing Board Chair. In their reactions, a cross section of Alidinma indigenes expressed joy and gratitude to their illustrious son, Ebie for the prompt commencement of the multiple projects, describing him as a promise keeper and a public officer with sterling character.
The NDDC Board Chairman had during the visit officially unveiled contractors handling other major projects to elders of the community. He described education, health and security as basic necessities that give meaning to life. He told the excited members of the community who warmly received him and his entourage that education is an investment for the future and key to eliminating inequality and poverty in the land.
According to him, the reconstruction will produce six new classrooms block, a Laboratory alongside accommodation structure for the Principal, Teachers and Youth Corp members. The reconstructed school projects are expected to be inaugurated before the end of the year.
Another six classrooms block is to be constructed in the Primary School and it will be handled by Femon Nigeria Limited.
Mr. Ebie later announced the award of contract for the reconstruction and equipment of the only hospital in Agbor Alidinma community – a Government Hospital that has become an eyesore, having been abandoned and left to rot for over a decade. Overgrown by grasses and trees, the health facility has neither roof, water nor facilities.
Recall that the Hospital was built when Ebie’s father was Commissioner for Health in the defunct Midwest region in the first Republic.
Ebie disclosed that the hospital was being revitalised in memory of his late father. The project which also includes Doctors’ quarters, Corps members quarters and staff quarters will be handled by Azzantis Nigeria Ltd, a renowned construction firm.
On the issue of security, the NDDC boss emphasized its importance to the citizens, hence, a key tool in driving development. He disclosed that in the coming days, the military’s presence will be felt in the community as there are ongoing plans to establish an Army Base in a strategic area of Agbor Alidinma community complete with accommodation for the military personnels that will be drafted there.The Army base, according to him will maintain a 24-hour surveillance on the community to protect the projects and secure lives and property of the people.
A Police Station, Ebie further revealed, will also be built in Ekuku Agbor, a neighboring community to boost and enhance security. Work is to commence immediately.
The NDDC boss used the opportunity to remind the community of the need to guard the project’s jealousy in order to serve their purposes.
The NDDC chairman’s entourage later proceeded to various project sites for an on-the-spot assessment and inspection of on-going works like the Solar-powered water projects in Agbor Alidinma and Obi Agbor Communities. Both projects with 20,000 litres tank capacity at the time of inspection were almost at the completion stage and will be commissioned on or before the end of this month.
