Let’s have less alcohol, sex, ritual in Nollywood – Husseini insists

Again, the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, Dr. Shaibu HUSSEINI, has appealed to Nollywood film makers to tone down the excessive use of alcohol, cigarette and outlandish showcase of sex and ritual in their films.

The ED who has been preaching this gospel round the country since he was appointed last March said these does portray who we are as a people and that it is not a good moral lesson for the youths.

Husseini said this at the ongoing Lagos International Film and Cinema Convention (LIFACC) in Lagos.

According to him Nigeria is not about alcohol, cigarette, sex or ritual killings alone and appealed to the movie makers to down play such scenes in their movies.

He also spoke on why movie makers should strive to insure their lives and equipment used during film making as this will cut their costs in case of mishap.

Also speaking at the session was the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman who was represented by an official from the Lagos office of the Commission.

He told the audience that drug barons and fraudsters now use movie makers to launder their ill gotten wealth just as some insurance executives were on hand to speak on how movie makers can insure their lives and equipment while shooting their pictures.

The event was well attended by prominent names in the industry such as Joke Silver, Mahmud Alli-Balogun, Ali Baba, Theo Akatugba and othersThe National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Thursday declared the need for more investments in community cinemas.

The NFVCB boss also spoke on community cinema is any volunteer-led and non-profit organisation that shows films in its community.

Husseini in his speech, called on stakeholders to seek partnerships with already established cinemas like Film One.

Said he: “We need to begin to invest in community cinemas. You don’t have to do it alone. You can have the building, then you go to already established cinema establishments like Film One.

“Tell them that you have a building you can convert into a cinema, ask them for equipment and then we’ll know how to share. It’s a cash cow, it’s where you’ll get your revenues from but presently as it is, it is a bit elitist”.

Said Husseini as he spoke on the classification of films: “We have improved and we will improve. All those years of ‘I sent my film and it took one week, three months’ is over.

“If you send your film today and you don’t get a response in 48 hours, send me an email”.

The convention brought together stakeholders and professionals in showbiz with the aim of proffering solutions to the problems bedevilling the industry I.
