The Lagos State House of Assembly has been under the leadership of Mudashiru Obasa for over a decade, with his trajectory as Speaker being marked by significant events. As a unicameral legislative body responsible for making laws for the state, Obasa has been the Speaker since 2015, making him the longest-serving Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
His leadership was in January 2025, marked by controversy, including his impeachment, which was later overturned. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by 35 lawmakers who accused him of high-handedness, financial misappropriation, and authoritarian leadership. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, took over as Speaker but later resigned, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement.
Unconfirmed sources claimed that President Bola Tinubu intervened, and Obasa was reinstated as Speaker on March 3, 2025, after a meeting with the President. Obasa’s reinstatement was seen as a boost to his leadership, but it also raised questions about the power dynamics within the Assembly.
Obasa’s ambition to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos State is a topic of discussion; and many analysts alluded to it as the primary reason for his impeachment in the first instance. However, there are potential powers against his governorship ambition, including internal party politics and the emergence of new candidates. One notable candidate is Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, who is reportedly angling to become the next governor of Lagos State.
Some of the powers against Obasa’s governorship ambition include
- Internal Party Politics:Obasa’s impeachment and reinstatement suggest that there are internal conflicts within the party that could affect his chances. More so, as the internal party politics is overwhelmingly controlled by Tinubu.
- Emergence of New Candidates: Seyi Tinubu’s reported interest in the governorship position could also pose a challenge to Obasa’s ambition.
The reasons for Obasa’s impeachment included
- High-Handedness: Obasa was accused of being authoritarian and high-handed in his leadership style.
- Financial Misappropriation: There were allegations of financial impropriety against Obasa.
- Snide Remarks: Obasa’s comments about Governor Sanwo-Olu were seen as disrespectful and may have contributed to his impeachment.
Seyi Tinubu’s reported interest in the governorship position was another factor linked with the impeachment; and could significantly impact the political landscape of Lagos State. As the son of President Bola Tinubu, he may have an advantage in terms of party support and funding. However, it’s unclear how the Omonilé (Lagos indigene) would perceive his candidacy compared to Obasa, who has a long history of service in the state.
The choice between Obasa and Seyi Tinubu would depend on various factors, including
- Party Support: Which candidate would the party machinery support?
- Public Perception: How would the Omonilé perceive each candidate’s leadership style and qualifications?
- Policy Direction: Which candidate’s policies would align with the needs and aspirations of Lagos State residents?
Ultimately, the outcome would depend on various factors, including party politics, public opinion, and the candidates’ qualifications and policies.
As Speaker, Obasa has overseen the passage of numerous bills and laws that have contributed to the development of Lagos State. Some of his notable achievements include:
