Former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Ms. Lauretta Onochie, has pooh- photoed the recently released NBS inflation rate describing it as as relabased figures.
In a post in her verified X platform she wrote as follows.
“Rebased inflation which magically changed the inflation figure from 34.8% in December 2024 to 24.48% in January 2025 on paper?
This was after being handed an inflation rate of 22.41% in May 2023. (Food inflation 24.82% & Core inflation 20.14%. Source: CBN)
The inflation rate rose from 22.41% to 34.8% in just under 7 months (May – December 2024) under their watch.
Being the ‘smart’ people they are, they looked for a shortcut, rebased the figure and FIAAM, like the magicians they are, the inflation rate (figure) became 24.48% in January 2025, even though nothing changed in reality, of course except the figures.
Some people (the usual people) clapped then, and they hoped that many Nigerians wouldn’t pay attention and that many would quickly forget.
‘Old things have passed away. Behold all things have become new’.
Now in September 2025, they announce 20%, while the market continues to speak the actual reality and all of us, including the hailing hailers continue to ‘chop breakfast’.
As a matter of fact, even if we accept their claim of a 4.48% drop in inflation in their 2 years and 3 months in charge, the inflation rate today should realistically be above 30%.
Of course, the game plan is simple – target to pronounce a single digit, maybe 5 or even 2% inflation figure by December 2026 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They should continue.
Note: I do not have a problem with anyone celebrating, nor am I stopping anyone from celebrating, but celebrate with your sense because in the end it is you and all of us that are being bled and our heads being used.

NB: Please, allow me to wail in peace.

ME: They keep manipulating the figures. But we were not born yesterday. The reality on ground, speaks differently. The quality of lives of Nigerians, shows the true situation on ground. There’s no improvement in the Nigerian economy.
