Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) running for a second term, has overwhelmingly won the Anambra State governorship election conducted on Saturday.
Soludo, who was the favourite to win the election, defeated 15 other candidates, including Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. George Moughalu of the Labour Party (LP), John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
At about 7:30 am on Sunday, the announcement by the state Returning Officer, Prof. Edogah Omoregie, who is the Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, announced that Soludo polled 422,664 votes across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state to defeat his main challenger, APC’s Ukachukwu, who got 99,445 votes, while Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party received 37,753 votes
By the victory, Soludo joins Mr. Peter Obi (2006 t0 2014), and Chief Willie Obiano 2014 to 2022) as the governors on APGA’s ticket to have won re-election in the state.
Other past elected governors of the state, since it Enugu State was carved out of the old Anambra State in 1991 are: Chief Chinwoke Mbadinuju of the Peoples Democratic Party (1999 to 2003), Dr. Chris Ngige of the PDP (2003 to 2006) and Dame Virginia Etiaba of APGA (November 2006 to February 2007).
Chief Andy Uba of the Uba, who was in office from 29 May 2007 until his election was annulled by the court on 14 June 2007.
