Ifako-IjThe Christian community in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area is set to join their counterparts worldwide tomorrow in observing Ash Wednesday, marking the solemn beginning of the Lenten season. The day will be characterized by penitent prayers, fasting, and the distribution of ashes, as the faithful commit to a 40-day journey of spiritual reflection leading up to Easter.
In a statement released from his office today, Prince Asade Adedayo, a prominent stakeholder in the community, urged all residents to use this sacred period to pray for the progress and peace of Ifako-Ijaiye.
”As we prepare to mark Ash Wednesday tomorrow, we are reminded of our shared humanity and our collective need for divine guidance,” Prince Adedayo said. “I encourage all Christians across Ifako-Ijaiye to embrace this season with sincerity, using the spiritual tools of fasting and prayer not only for personal renewal but to intercede for the peace, development, and prosperity of our beloved local government area.”
Prince Adedayo emphasized that the values of Lent—sacrifice, charity, and reflection—align perfectly with the civic virtues required to build a stronger community. He commended the clergy for their leadership and urged residents to support one another throughout the Lenten period.
”Let us pray for our leaders, for our youth, and for the safety of every neighborhood in Ifako-Ijaiye. A community rooted in prayer is a community destined for greatness,” he added.
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of mortality and repentance, accompanied by the phrase, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Services will be held across various denominations in the area tomorrow, drawing large congregations of worshippers beginning their Lenten fast.
The Lenten season will culminate in the celebration of Easter Sunday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
