Like Optimum Niteclub I wrote about last week, Magama was another nightclub that had no gate fee; it was a free entry provided one dressed to appreciable level.
It was owned by one northerner from Sokoto It was located along Lady Lak/Pedro road Somolu just almost opposite the Pedro Police Station Somolu.
The late Mustaph Abdullahi, Micah Okoh (the legend) one of the photographers on the employment of the good old Daily Times of Nigeria Plc., of Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi days and I were members of the club.
Okoh introduced us to the place, having known the owner for years before us.
We, Abdullahi and I, wormed ourselves into the Alhaji’s heart with our constant positive mention of the happenings in the club in our two columns down space in the defunct Evening Times, the first evening paper in Nigeria that the likes of Guardian Express and PMnews took after.
It was in one of our visits that Okoh, ‘intoxicated’ by the music from the club’s juke box, yelled to me, ‘ take me to the dancefloor.’ A fantastic place, the good thing about it was that floozies were not allowed in alone, you must be accompanied and men became ‘beautiful brides’ as ladies of easy virtue swoop on them to accompany them into the club.
